Finding the Groove

March 12, 2018

It’s two weeks into the ten-week challenge and the comradery between the more than two dozen early birds is coming together like a symphony. The rhythm of the crack of dawn morning workouts becoming part of the day.

Similar to a special ops unit, one by one cars pull into the ample parking lot of Cora McCorvey YMCA. Doors slam, trunks open and close; work out bags are slung over shoulders in an almost synchronized fashion. Then the warriors line up waiting for the doors to open at 6:00 a.m.

Those first few mornings the frigid temperatures, snow covered icy streets, slippery walk areas and wicked winds caused my inner self to scream “WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING HERE?” inside my head, of course. Looking around and seeing the other warriors shivering waiting for the doors to open shut out those thoughts immediately. This is serious business. This is about health. Keeping my bone density up is my goal.

When I first joined the I2H Challenge, Round Five, it was to fit into that little black dress. Now two years into breast cancer remission, the challenge is all about staying alive and living my best authentic self. No easy outs. It’s demanding work. You get out what you put in. And now I2H XI Noire Elite’s fitness coaches are leading the way into the beautiful Cora McCorvey YMCA and we are following looking like team training for the battle of a lifetime.

That’s what the I2H Fitness Challenge is all about, fighting hard to win the game of living a longer, healthier life. Perfecting the game of making healthy choices in food and body movement. Finding the center within ourselves that will help maintain the balance needed for good health.

We are learning about the three pillars of strength:

Fitness: pushing our body to do what it’s meant to do, the right way to move.
Nutrition: essential fuel to push our bodies recognizing that we are what we eat. Ain’t that the truth?
Serenity: of mind and heart. It’s about mental health. Why? Why? Why do we continue to do the things we do? Eat the things we know we shouldn’t? How do we change those old tapes in our heads? Those internal thoughts of “you can’t” “you won’t” “what the heck are you doing here?” to name a few.

It’s immediately empowering entering the front doors passing the beautiful flowing fountain, finding our way to the lockers, doing the sign-in ritual and entering the room of life, the workout room. Then there’s that buddy aspect.

There’s something so powerful about teaming up with others and working collectively for a common cause. Whether it’s a game, an Olympian win, or a personal, individual healthy transformation, coaches are the ones who bring their teams to victory. Coaches keep the team motivated, inspired, pushing them to discover their best. They help the team and each of us find our independent groove.

Barely into week three of the I2H XI, we’re already taking registrations for I2H XII which begins in May. We want to demonstrate that North Minneapolis is committed to taking a leadership role in the health revolution.
